Walter Hodel, devoted father and grandfather, passed away on Saturday, July 23rd at the age of 82. Walter was born in Dundee, Illinois, on April 16th, 1940. He was a long-time resident of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He moved to the Sheboygan area following the death of his parents and subsequent sale of the family farm on Silver Spring Drive. Walter was a proud member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers since 1964. He spent 40 years as a bricklayer with Megal Construction.
Walter had many talents and shared them unselfishly, helping family and friends with building, home and auto repairs. He was an animal lover and gardener. He was a Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packer fan. He was a self-taught mechanic and carpenter and had a true gift for car repair and restoration. If he didn’t know how to do it, he would learn. Walter spent many hours visiting the library and poring through books, manuals and auto repair periodicals. In retirement he enjoyed woodworking and created custom made barnwood frames.
Born the son of Carl and Clara Hodel, Walter shared his youth and adult life with his four siblings. He married Judith Hodel in 1969 and together they had son Jason Hodel. Following his retirement from Megal, Walter was an active and dedicated Grandpa to Jason’s children, Madelaine and Jackson. He treasured their time together and coordinated countless outings and day trips. He would travel for hours to be at every sporting event or concert.
Walter’s failing health limited his activities, but not his spirit; as he continued to live on his own. His desire to remain in his home was granted up until his death, after a very brief stay in hospice.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Clara Hodel, sister Ellie Ahlf and brother Carl Hodel. Walter will be greatly missed by his son Jason and his spouse Colleen, and his grandchildren, Madelaine and Jackson. He is further survived by his sisters Helen (Edward) and Louise (Robert) and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, as well as extended family in Canada and Switzerland.
At Walter’s request, there will be a private family burial at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
Walter was very generous in giving to numerous charities. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to the foundation of your choice are appreciated.
