Margie Cape Obituary

Margie Cape, age 87 of Manitowoc passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc.

Margie was born Margie A. Glaeser in Manitowoc on May 17, 1935. Her parents were Herbert and Anita (Kieselhorst) Glaeser. She was baptized Marjorie Agnes at First German Ev. Lutheran Church and attended school there K-8th grade. She then went on to Washington Jr. High and Lincoln High graduating in 1953. On November 25, 1958, she was married to William L. Cape in Portsmouth, Virginia. He preceded her in death on January 15, 2015.

Her first employment was with Tasty Crispy scooping ice cream. She worked in a grocery store during high school and by the time she graduated she was working at Kaufman Mfg. Co. in the sales department typing orders and shortly after graduation she became the receptionist. In 1956 she began working at Ames Motors as an accounts receivable clerk until the business was sold to Yanda Motors in 1961 at which time she became the bookkeeper. In 1965 she worked at the Aluminum Specialty as Secretary to Director of Purchases. In 1968 was hired at Cher-Make Sausage Company as Office Manager. Later her duties grew to include Controller and Director of Human Resources until she retired from Cher-Make in May, 1997.

She volunteered at the front desk at Holy Family Hospital or at their Harbortown Clinic and was also a Medicare helper and helped in the clerical area of Holy Family Hospice. She worked at the voting polls as an inspector and chairperson and also volunteered as a teacher’s helper at Ben Franklin Elementary School. She was a member of the YMCA, and later joined the HFM Wellness Center. She helped others often, especially if they were disabled and couldn’t get out. She was active in her church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church, Bethany’s Ladies Aid, and Bethany’s Altar Guild. In 2008 Marge left Bethany and joined Redeemer Lutheran Church where again she began singing in the choir and served on the church’s finance committee.

Marge loved her family dearly and traveled near and far to be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved traveling, reading, knitting, crocheting, swimming and playing cards, especially Sheepshead.

She was survived by her son: Michael Cape and his wife Kim; her daughter: Barbara Cape, along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Evelyn Cape. She was preceded in death by her husband: William L. Cape; her parents: Herbert and Anita Glaeser; one sister and brother-in-law: Dorothy and Glen Wawirka; three brothers: Wallace, Richard and Herbert Jr.; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Glaeser Meisner; one niece: Susan Glaeser Ebert; three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law: Virginia (Floyd) Jones, Maurine Cape, Quinton (Helen) Cape, and Burman Cape.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at the Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory, 1122 South 8th Street, Manitowoc. The Rev. Zachary DeArmond will officiate with entombment of her cremated remains to take place at a later date at the Knollwood Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday at the funeral home from 12:30 PM until the time of service at 2:30 PM.
