Obituary

Edward Grenier, age 84, of Manitowoc, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, following a battle with cancer.

Ed was born on May 5, 1937, in Township of Cooperstown, son of the late Edward and Norma (Cherney) Grenier. He grew up at the Maribel Caves Hotel on the Cherney land. Ed attended local schools and later attended the Wentworth Military School and graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1955. Following high school, he attended Oshkosh Junior College. He was a U.S. Army veteran from March 7, 1958, until February 28, 1961 serving in Korea and Japan. On August 1, 1964, he married the love of his life for 57 years Caroline T. Hardtke at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Manitowoc. From the age of 12, he helped work in construction for his grandfather at the Adolf Cherney Construction Company and later became a truck driver and heavy equipment operator, working for many construction companies in the area.

In his younger years, Ed enjoyed playing fastpitch baseball and softball. He also played football in college and for the Manitowoc Chiefs.  In the past, he served at President of the Holy Innocents Athletic Association organizing softball and dartball tournaments and the weekly Bingo. He was also involved in the Branch area Firefighter’s Park coaching girls’ softball and umpiring many baseball games. He loved golfing and fishing, especially fishing with his grandsons. Ed enjoyed watching his grandkids participating in their sports and enjoyed the Packers, Brewers and all Wisconsin sports. He is a member of the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame, Operating Engineers Local #139, and St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

Survivors include his wife: Carrie Grenier, Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law: Kelly (Debbie) Grenier, Maribel; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Melissa Grenier, Manitowoc, Lisa (Michael) Saubert, Manitowoc, Teresa (Troy) Stockinger, Manitowoc; nine grandchildren: Blake Grenier-Maurer, Daniel Kalk, Tanner Grenier, Collin Saubert, Hunter Saubert, Paige Saubert, Jaydin Grenier, Cabrena Stockinger, Makena Stockinger; two great grandchildren: Tayana Kalk and Jordan Kalk; one brother-in-law and four sisters-in-law: Allen (Joanne) Hardtke, Billings, MT, Ann Beeman, Manitowoc, Judy Hardtke, Manitowoc, Lynn Hardtke; and his favorite fur buddy: Charlie. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Norma Grenier; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Herold and Anna Hardtke; two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law: Eleanor (Benjamin) Weina, Carmen Lesperance, George Hardtke, Anthony Hardtke and infant baby boy Hardtke.

Cremation has taken place at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2021, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand (1416 Grand Ave), Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Doug LeCaptain with burial of his cremated remains and full military honors to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home (928 S. 14th Street), Manitowoc, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. led by Deacon Alan Boeldt. The visitation will continue Monday morning, July 26, 2021, at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
