Amy Kaufman Obituary

Amy Ann (Holschbach) Kaufman, age 87, of Manitowoc, passed away Saturday morning, April 20, 2024, at St. Mary’s Home, Manitowoc.

Amy was born July 12, 1936, in rural Manitowoc County on the family farm on Wagon Wheel Road. She was the youngest of six children of Peter and Emma Holschbach. She had three brothers and two sisters – Reinard, Jeanette, Leo, Ione and William. Amy attended McAllister one room schoolhouse, Holy Innocents Catholic grade school and Lincoln High School, graduating in 1954. She graduated from Holy Family Nursing School in 1957 with her RN. She began her career in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Soon after, she married Robert E. Kaufman, of Manitowoc. Together they moved to Anchorage, Alaska where Amy worked at Alaska Native Children’s Hospital. Together the family moved to Indianapolis and then back to Manitowoc.

Throughout her life, Amy was active in the Manitowoc community. She was an original and loyal member of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA, a member of the Manitowoc Garden Club and Gourmet Club, docent at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum, a member of the Service League, PEO Chapter J and the charity “Americans Serving African Children”. She was an avid tennis player and fan, and active in the USTA Tennis League, traveling to play in tournaments throughout the Midwest. Bob and Amy and their family spent time in Naples, Florida and Fish Creek, Wisconsin. Amy loved going on walks and most memorably hiked the Grand Canyon with friends. After her children grew, she returned to work at Manitowoc Hospice.

Amy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was a ray of positivity in our lives, believing that everything happens for a reason, and always having a way of making us feel better.

Survivors include four children: Charles Kaufman, Manitowoc, Thomas Kaufman, Pflugerville, TX, Lisa Kaufman (J. Scott Ferguson) of Verona, and Mary-Frances (Bryan) Conway of Hoffman Estates, IL; five grandchildren: Emma Ferguson (Dan Almond), Maggie Ferguson, John Ferguson, Matthew Conway and David Conway; two sisters-in-law: Janet Breuer, Manitowoc and Millie Kaufman, St. Petersburg, FL. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings and her husband, Robert.
